SUPERFLIP is a monumental short film by Celine Parreñas Shimizu filmed in the summer of 1995. The 30-minute film explores the life, love and labor of a Filipino immigrant couple and was shot in iconic SOMA locations such as the original Carmen’s Restaurant, Blanche’s Garden, Rigo’s Inner City / Home mural and 330 Ritch / Victory Hall.
The film also includes youth and elders from the neighborhood—Filipino World War II Veterans and community members who responded to the casting call at the SOMA Recreational Center.
SUPERFLIP captures the vivid presence and cultural contradictions of Filipinos struggling to make home in the South of Market in the 90’s.
